Today on USAToday.com there was an article on how many people are starting businesses or changing their careers in order to cope with the recession. The article chronicles the stories of a real estate agent-turned-pinata shop owner, an IT manager-turned-piano instructor, a lumber mill worker-turned-registered nurse, and others.

The article is a wonderful reminder of what true problem solving really needs: being able to think outside of the box. When a marketing executive found himself unemployed, he didn’t join the hoards of people looking for the same job he’d just lost; instead, he dove into something he had studied in college, geology and soil testing. Another woman went from being a recruiter to owning a successful pet care and dog walking company.

These are the kind of attitude that gets people through economic recessions, as well as helps to create new businesses. If you are thinking about starting a new career or your own business, think about what skills you can bring to the table. Do you have a degree from a top culinary school that you’ve never done anything with? Can you use your experience raising your kids to help you start a home daycare business? What experience, education, or interests can you use to help yourself cope with the recession?

Do you dream of owning a small boat and sailing away on the high seas? In case you’re not quite that adventurous, have you ever just wished you could go out on weekends and have fun in the sun on your own jet ski or other personal watercraft? If you can answer yes to these or similar questions, just how far are you willing to go to make your dreams come true?

Will you treat your boat like the prized possession it should be? Are you willing to go all out and buy fancy boat accessories to make your craft stand out from the rest? How about getting deep into the regular maintenance and doing a lot of the elbow greasing yourself?

When you own a boat, there is always something to be done to make sure it is staying in the best shape possible. Will you learn the distinction between needing a new anchor and having to purchase new stern drive parts?

What about when your boat needs to be keel hauled? How much passion will you have to lift that vessel out of the water and then participate in the scraping of barnacles, the sanding, buffing, and repainting? These are all the sort of questions you will need to be able to answer if you plan on successfully owning your own boat.

The Phenomenon of the Part-Time Seller

Websites such as eBay, Half.com, Amazon.com, Etsy, and even Craigslist have seen the rise of the part-time seller: someone who sells stuff in their spare time to make a little extra cash, but doesn’t run it as a serious business.

If you are a part-time seller, you may find yourself selling off items such as:

Clothes and furniture you no longer want
Collectibles you are no longer interested in
Music and DVDs you have tired of
Electronics that you don’t need anymore, usually because you’ve upgraded
Jewelry you don’t like anymore (or perhaps it’s the person who gave it to you that you don’t like anymore)

Of course, some part-time sellers start selling off their stuff because they really need money for one reason or another. In that case, you’ll probably start selling off these items whether you truly don’t want them anymore or not, just to get some cash flowing in.

The biggest problem is that the market isn’t very good right now, and if you list an item on most of these sites, you’ll have to wait for it to sell. This can take some time if you want top dollar for your stuff, though it will sell much faster if you are willing to price it competitively (read: lower than most similar items are priced).

For instance you can get cash for gold by selling it online. However, some jewelry isn’t worth very much, and most likely it’ll take a while to sell, so you’ll be best off if you sell it as scrap gold at a pawn shop.

Many third-party seller sites are beginning to recognize that part-time sellers are the lifeblood of their business. For instance, eBay has instituted a new fees policy where you get five free insertion fees every month. This is obviously geared toward the small, part-time sellers — they are trying to encourage people who just like to sell off their unwanted stuff to sell it all on eBay. It’s a smart move, since the fees have been prohibitively high for those types of sellers, who usually can make much more by selling an item for free on Craigslist.

All I can say is, it’s about time they recognized the phenomenon of the part-time seller!

Mortgage Training Online

I decided about two months ago to start working on a mortgage education. I have found that this industry is where my true calling is. I like the financial industry and I prefer to work in real estate arenas because of my favor for this market. For these reasons, I set out to find the best opportunities available t help me to learn what I needed to learn so that when I sit for my Florida mortgage licensing course, I will do very well on it. There are many great programs available online and that is reassuring to know.

Since the market is so difficult right now here, I am not able to just leave my job. So, I have been working hard at getting my training while working full time. Being able to do this through online programs is very important to me. The loan officer training that I am getting online is better for me and more readily available to me for complete. I am also getting some FHA training, which seems to be something that many of the potential employers out there are looking for in those who they are hiring. Within a few months, I’ll be readily available to fill those positions.

Pet Sitting was a Great Job

People like to talk negatively about the jobs that they had when they were in high school and college. I, on the other hand, think that some of the best jobs I’ve ever had were the ones that I had during those times. One of my favorite old jobs was pet sitting.

I got started in pet sitting by accident. I had applied for a babysitting job with a family that had an adorable Boston Terrier. At the interview, I got along far better with the dog than I did with the kids. The family decided to go with another baby sitter. However, when they went on vacation later that year, they remembered me and called to see if I’d be interested in pet sitting.

As I was walking their dog around the neighborhood, a neighbor approached with a Great Dane and we got to talking. One thing led to another and I soon found myself pet sitting for people all throughout the area. I did this for several years and it was the most fun job that I ever had. It was stress-free decent income that allowed me to get exercise while I worked. Sometimes I think I’d like to go back to work like that again today!
