Making your Fireplace Shine for Showings

If you are trying to get your house ready to show and you have one or more wood burning fireplaces in your home, you may well be leaving them till last out of a desire to avoid actually have to prep them for staging. However, a well cleaned and nicely staged fireplace isn’t hard to do and can really provide an eye-catching focal point to your room.

First, gather all the materials that you’ll need. Make sure you have a large garbage can within arm’s reach. You may want to double up on liners in your garbage can so that there’s no chance of spills. When you clean your fireplace remember to lay down plastic sheeting in the area around the hearth. A good quality pair of long rubber gloves will make the job far more pleasant.

Next, shovel out the cold ashes from the fireplace and sweep it out. If you have access to a shop vacuum, you can use this to remove the remaining traces of ash from the fireplace. Remove the grate. You may want to take any iron or brass grates or andirons outside to clean to keep the mess down.

To help contain the sooty build up that you’ll be cleaning out of the chimney, you may want to line the bottom of the fireplace with newspapers so that you can just fold them up and put them in the garbage as you work, saving yourself from shovelling up more ashes as you work.

Take a wire brush to the inside of the fireplace and lower chimney. As the newspapers accumulate piles of soot and ash, fold them up and place them in the garbage. Watch as you brush the brickwork; if any of the bricks look like they’re deteriorating then be very careful with them.

The next step can be messy, if you aren’t already messy enough. What you need to do is mix up your solvent for cleaning the bricks. A very popular solution for this task is about eight tablespoons of TSP added to three litres, or just under a gallon, of hot water. Dip your wire brush into the solution and use to scrub down the inside of your fireplace. Use plain warm water and rags to rinse the solution from the fireplace when you’re done. Repeat if any stains remain.

If you have a fireplace window screen, your owner’s manual for the product should have a recommended glass product suggested for cleaning the glass. If not, then a trip to a fireplace and woodstove store should provide you with the information that you need to get an appropriate product to clean yours.

Once your fireplace is clean, take a look at it with an objective eye. If the painted surround or the mantle are discoloured at all, give them a fresh coat of paint. Clear everything off your mantle; most people keep far too much clutter on their mantlepiece. Ideally, you should have one large piece of artwork over your fireplace. If you don’t own one, see about borrowing or renting one for staging purposes. Many art galleries will rent you a painting for a reasonable fee. Place a few items on your mantle but avoid pictures of your family so that your prospective buyer can more easily picture their own family living in this room.

When your home is being shown have a fire lit in the fireplace to highlight the fact that it’s a useable feature and to create a cozy atmosphere. Don’t light a fire if it’s particularly warm out, of course, or if there will be no one home after the showing to avoid any mishaps. Don’t be afraid to ask your realtor for any ideas they might have to help you showcase your fireplace as well.

The Best Place to Put an Indoor Fountain

Has anyone had a water wall fountains installed in their home? I’ve been thinking about it since I just moved in to a new Village Home with a great big tiled entryway. It’s pretty impressive with a curved staircase and columns, but frankly, the space is sort of one that isn’t very usable-it’s actually kind of a cold space-and I thought one of those Wall fountains would really help to give it some feng shui.

The space is curved, and there’s even a large art niche at one side of it. I’ve thought of just putting a bench there with a plant or something, maybe facing the art niche. But who would really sit there all uncomfortably just to stare at art? Instead. I was thinking of a nice fountain, perhaps in the art niche, with a comfy chair/ottoman thing facing it with a reading lamp. I want to be sure that it doesn’t end up looking too Victorian-ish, and I don’t know if I have enough room for a lounge chair thing. Also, the space is between the front room and the family room, so really-would anyone sit there? And do I want a fountain to be where nobody relaxes? Does anyone have any ideas?

A CPAP machine is one of the best pieces of CPAP equipment that anyone can own who has sleep apnea. I myself do not personally have sleep apnea, but I have known several people who do have it. Because of this I got somewhat familiar with the condition and what they would go through before they were able to get a machine that was able to help them out as well as the ones that they were able to find and get their hands on.

I remember my second grade teacher was probably the first person I ever knew who had sleep apnea. Of course at the time I did not know too much about it or about her, but I remember she mentioned the words sleep apnea a few times in class and I think she explained to us some about what it was and how it worked and what it did and what kind of affect it had on her. But I do not think I really learned too much about it until later on in life, when my uncle was diagnosed with having it. I am glad there are machines out there to help, but still I sure hope I never have it.

Seeing the Light

Whether it is a Security System in Seattle Washington or a Security System in Phoenix Arizona, no matter where I am, I want a way to keep my home safe. This is only a new development for me, as I have never before really cared much or really even thought about needing to secure my house. It is not that I am an unsafe or clueless person when it comes to personal safety or securing my belongings or anything. I mean, if I go out for a night on the town, I keep an eye on my drink at all times, I always have my purse right next to me, I never let strangers handle my bags at the airport, and so on. I just have never really considered my house as something that needs special consideration beyond making sure my doors are locked and the stove is off.

But I have been thinking about it recently and taking a closer look around at my house and home, and all the things I have in it. I realized I have my kids to protect, not just my stuff. And it is not all just stuff either that is easily replaceable. Our photo albums, journals, all our home videos and memories are all here. I have decided to get a good alarm for the home now.

What, Are You Kidding?

I asked for a Coach bag for Christmas. That’s all I wanted; this gorgeous blue gray suede hobo bag called “Zoe”. Isn’t that a cute name? It’s a beautiful bag. The craftsmanship is guaranteed for life (how many things can you say THAT about? Not many!) and it’s just a beautiful, elegant and stylish bag that I totally deserve because I’ve had a really hard year. It’s all I want and I can’t afford it for myself. I even set up one of those dream fund things on Dream Bank, because if everyone in my family wanted to contribute a little bit, then I could get the one thing I really want. Instead, what do I get on Christmas morning?

I tear open a box big enough to fit a bag and find inside a DVD labeler and DVD labeling sheets. They thought it would be a great and thoughtful idea to go with my DVD printing software. My dad even went so far as to say that he thought I was kidding about the Coach bag, because that is so frivolous and silly and I’m not like that. I burst into tears right in front of the Christmas tree.
